Look! I did it and it ain't half bad. I picked this background for two reasons: 1. Adam started school this week, in full-blown engineering courses and I haven't seen him during waking hours in the last three days. 2. I also started school this week with 48 kindergarten students, a brand new school, and a brand new laptop. It couldn't be any better.
It still surprises me that I ended up teaching small children. There are still moments during the school day when a 5 year old looks at me and says(insert the whiniest voice you can imagine) "But I don't want to learn math!" and I'm at a loss as to what to say back. I think, "You're right, I can't make you do anything and no one should make someone else do anything they don't want to do" and in the 15 seconds it took me to think that through I've already lost complete control of the whole class. My co-worker must have noticed my slack jawed lack of a verbal response and leaned over and said "That's okay, you don't have to want to." I think I might be in the wrong profession, I can't think that fast on my feet with all those little eyes starting back at me. Regardless of my shortcomings, the moment of truth happens at 6 a.m. every morning when the alarm goes off and before I can really form a fluid thought, I find myself getting up happily, and without complaint. The only explanation for this is that I think I might love my job. I love these wonderful little people with which I get to spend my entire day, and while I might not be discussing great literature or calculating varied integrals, I think sitting on the floor and reading A Bad Case of the Stripes (by David Shannon) with 18 brilliant and beautiful 5 years olds is a joy unto itself. I think I couldn't be happier.

Okay, who really loves me and can help me?

I can't figure out how to post a beautiful background on this hideous blog. I've been told countless times about wonderful websites to make it easier, and it makes me feel like an idiot because I do not understand what they are saying, and I think I'm an intelligent person so it must be the computer's fault and not my own. My dear friend Kaija came over tonight, and we looked at many different blogs on Adam's 52 inch computer screen, and it felt like a giant homage to my inefficiency. I'm great with paint and paper, and my classroom at school is absolutely adorable, but my blog looks like I'm trying to be a minimalist (which I definitely am not). So please help.

P.S. Don't just tell me that I should go to some website and just follow the directions. I've tried that. I'm stupider than I look. I can't just follow directions. So far, this is a tri-annual event here, and I'm looking to upgrade it to bi-monthly. So here goes a recap of the last three months:

1. I now work at a school in Los Altos, and I love it. Next year it looks like we're piloting a new program (very hush hush, I'd give details but I'm afraid you might steal my ideas) and it looks like I might be in charge of a quite a bit of it and I'm excited. Some days I still can't believe I'm in early childhood education, but you can't fight fate.
2. We went to Lee Lee's wedding in DC in November, and I'm not so sure she would have gotten to her wedding reception if I wasn't there, and I was SO happy to be a part of it. What a beautiful bride.
3. We spent two weeks in Utah for Christmas, and I actually cried (Yes me! I CRIED!) when we left. I have vowed that I will never live in Utah, they have enough mormons and I am needed elsewhere, but it's hard to wave goodbye to my entire family.
4. Adam started Rigoletto rehearsals this week, and so begins another opera fiasco. He will more than likely be wearing tights again, and at one point his part is 'the storm blowing in' and he wears a large gray costume and makes wind noises. I'm laughing already and the performance isn't for another month. Don't tell Adam, he gets really mad when I laugh at him.

I married Jim Halpert

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_dTwzzZPbgS8/RyqCLYu6cVI/AAAAAAAAADs/u5j0TCfO0Rc/s200/Photo+108.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128054257844121938" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_dTwzzZPbgS8/RyqB-Yu6cUI/AAAAAAAAADk/avFaqzmyF90/s200/0000035571_20061027015757.1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128054034505822530" />

Step off Pam!
I watched The Office tonight instead of trick or treating and waited for my husband to come home from a night class. Welcome to my week. Last week, I was a full-time sub at a lovely little private K-8 school in the Silicon Valley. Then the middle school history teacher quit unexpectedly, and this week I'm rehashing Civil War battles and the causes of the Revolutionary War. I started this morning with 20 kids practicing a Stonewall Jackson REBEL YELL! (It was the key to winning the Battle of Bull Run). Needless to say, I was a big hit among the 10-12 year olds. I even received the ultimate compliment from an 11 year old boy: "Yeah, she's cool."
Afterwards, in a class meeting session, we played Survivor. We had to choose 10 people to send to the moon and start a new society. This is what they came up with (in this order): Dr. Griffith (student's dad, a heart surgeon), 2. Luke Skywalker 3. the Dalai Lama 4. Gwen Stefani 5. General Patton 6. Anna Kornikova 7. Bill Gates 8. Joan of Arc 9. Jerry Rice 10. Martha Stewart.

I think that speaks for itself of my teaching skills, I have no comment. Who says opera is boring? Anyway, Adam is part of the chorus, and our friend Isaac is the lead (the suicidal lover). It is set in 16th century Scotland, and they are all dressed like highlanders, kilts and swords and everything. When they first came out on stage, Adam in a full beard and Isaac with a shoulder-length flowy wig, I burst into a fit of laughter and had a hard time controlling myself. There is only so much you can pretend is just coughing. It's a very dramatic play, no humor to off-set the tragedy, and laughing is very inappropriate, not to mention that I had spilled tuna juice down the front of my dress on the way out the door and had no time to change. Between the smell and the bursts of laughing/coughing, my mother finally got up and moved down the aisle and pretended she didnt know me. Adam continued to sing in bad Italian with a beautiful tone and wave a sword around. No one can say my man isn't manly.

Lizzie in France

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_dTwzzZPbgS8/RjlWDWx2aVI/AAAAAAAAABs/wUXn2zhuV-4/s200/IMG_0489.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060170271981726034" />I love Paris in the springtime, I'm not so sure about the Fall.....Oh why oh why do I love Paris? Is there a more beautiful city in the world? I sat in Sacrament Meeting in Cannes, in the south of France, and listened to French translated into Thai, and then into English in my head. How does life work this way? I went to visit my dear friend Brittany in France this month. We spent a week in Cannes, where she lives, a day in Nice, and half a week in Paris.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_dTwzzZPbgS8/RjlWDWx2aWI/AAAAAAAAAB0/04I_dxj8l6I/s200/IMG_0504.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060170271981726050" />
She speaks French, we both speak Thai, we are both American, and whilst in the Musee D'Orsay we both pretended we were Thai. Mostly to avoid being associated with anyone who pronounces Edgar Degas like Las Vegas. Although, I will admit at one point we discussed in lengthy detail the merits of the Babysitters' Club movies, so where does that put us? Not exactly the most awe-inspiring conversations to have when staring up at the spires of Notre Dame (which by the way cost 14 euros to climb up, so we skipped it and bought 14 euros worth of pastries and gelato over the course of three days).

Clarence the Fat

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_dTwzzZPbgS8/Re-zOSxpFSI/AAAAAAAAABI/UbBpPSuKgXw/s320/Photo+60.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5039443566190466338" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_dTwzzZPbgS8/Re-zOixpFTI/AAAAAAAAABQ/L7I-IHVrzQs/s320/Photo+62.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5039443570485433650" />
One simple remedy of 'baby fever' is adopting a small animal to tide you over until that happy time when you're ready for little people to grace your marriage. Unfortunately, the 'small' animal that Lizzie fell in love with at the pound weighs 25lbs, which is heavier than her two year old nephew. He is moody, sleeps all day on Adam's pillow, and makes a strange unearthly noise when you squeeze his belly. And without further adieu, we give you Clarence the Fat (in no way is this in any reference to the Supreme Court Justice).

Haircuts

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_dTwzzZPbgS8/Re-r9CxpFRI/AAAAAAAAABA/C4r0Hz3cFOk/s320/Photo+58.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5039435573256328466" />
One of the simple joys of newly married life would be the fact that we still try to make an effort to look good for each other.
